Glory Days: The New Golden Age of HBCU Football
The NFL contacted us looking for creative stories about HBCU football that were inspiring, energetic, and timely to the media attention that HBCU football was receiving. Without any hesitation, my team knew we had to tell the story of the Golden Age of HBCU football.
Our Approach
For this documentary to be informative & emotionally connective, our story needs to take place in the past, but have clear emotional beats & themes that could seamlessly connect it to the present day. Although the Golden Age of HBCU Football was 40 years ago, the themes of resilience, bravery, and pride are tenets of these institutions and are passed down across generations.
I crafted our script to contextualize the importance of football as a vehicle to challenge the woes that black people faced during Jim Crow & segregation during the Golden Age of HBCU football.
Even through discrimination, violence, and systemic racism, the culture of HBCUs is the main tool for combatting a system that target black people. Our story ultimately focuses on HBCUs as a vehicle for empowering its students and athletes to stand proud against discrimination and celebrate their diverse cultures.
