We Playin’ Spades
Wondery Media and Amazon Studios wanted to create a game show podcast series hosted by two cultural icons, Waka Flocka Flame and Desi Banks. However, they needed help creating a tone and style that would give the show its unique angle and voice.
Our Approach
Spades is a staple card game in the black community; anything can go down around a Spades table. For each title and caption, I mixed in slang and colloquial speech to match the reckless, playful, and borderline inappropriate behavior of our talent for the episode.
“I Get Canceled Every Week” with Nick Cannon
On the podcast’s premiere episode, Nick Cannon pulls up to the table with his spades partner, Courtney B, to take on our hosts – hip hop heavy hitter, Waka Flocka Flame and comedian, Desi Banks. Waka and Desi tap into everything from Nick’s biggest movie career regret, the history behind Wild n’ Out, and why Nick needs 100 Million Dollars a year. Nothing is off limits! Issa whole lotta cussing, laughing, and shit talking…and of course we gon see if Nick and Courtney gon get run off the table or take home the crown!
“Will Smith Be Trippin” with Jay Pharoah
This week, SNL comedic legend, actor and impressionist Jay Pharoah pulls up to the table with his spades partner DJ Whoo Kid, to battle Waka and Desi. Well wait, actually, Jay Pharoah, Denzel Washington, Katt Williams, 50 Cent and about a dozen other people Jay does spot-on impressions of, pull up. Jay opens up about everything from going toe to toe with Lorne Michaels at SNL, to women requesting impersonations during sex, to the actor who said Jay’s impression of him wasn’t good enough. And as always….Issa whole lotta cussing, laughing, and shit-talking. Will Jay and Whoo Kid get run off the table, or live to see another day?!
“Don’t Prank Black People in the Hood” with Lil Rel Howery
This week, comedian and actor, Lil Rel Howery pulls up to the table with his partner Young Wayne to take on Waka and Desi. Lil Rel gets into everything from his audition for Get Out, to why it’s a good idea to listen to black women and a bad idea to pull pranks on black people in the hood! Lil Rel brings the jokes, knowledge and shit talking - all while trying to whoop ass in spades! It's gonna be a whole lot of cussing, laughs, and cards slapping the table. “Being Broke Inspired Me” with Kamillion
This week, actress and rapper, Kamillion comes through with her partner and hairstylist Keith The Great to go head-to-head with Waka Flocka Flame and Desi Banks. Kamillion talks about working with HER, the project that stopped her from being broke, and finds out if Waka and Desi are toe suckers. Uh huh - this one gets freaky y’all! Kamillion brings the energy, laughs, and her boss moves to the table — all while trying to spank that ass in spades! We got cussing, card slapping, and luxurious hair flips.
